In tribute to the Orpheus myth embedded in the play, I drew the subdued palette of the costumes straight from William Blake’s dark paintings of hell.
There were very few patterned fabrics in the costume design, giving the clothes a subtle sense of uniformity and oppression.
The colors of Lady's costumes were designed to mirror her inner journey from darkness to light.
The style and construction of the clothes were inspired primarily by Sears catalogs and documentary American photography of the late 1940s and early 50s.
